StereoPhoto Maker Won’t Open or Crashes on Start: The Portable-Package Checklist
StereoPhoto Maker is a portable program — no installer, no services, no registry footprint — so when it will not open, the cause is almost always simple. Work through this checklist in order; most cases end at step two.
1. Did the unzip actually finish?
SPM ships as a ZIP containing the executable and its companion DLL (spphotolib). Running the EXE from inside the ZIP preview, or from a half-extracted folder, fails quietly or crashes instantly. Extract the whole archive to a normal folder first, then run the EXE from there.
2. Is the DLL still beside the EXE?
The executable and spphotolib64.dll (or spphotolib32.dll) must stay in the same folder. Moving the EXE alone to the desktop is the single most common cause of “SPM won’t start”. Move them together, or make a shortcut instead.
3. Windows SmartScreen is not a crash
A blue “Windows protected your PC” prompt is SmartScreen reacting to an unsigned freeware executable, not an error. It appears once; the official files and their SHA-256 hashes are on the download page so you can verify what you have before deciding.
4. Antivirus quarantine
If the EXE vanished or is blocked, check your antivirus quarantine before re-downloading — and read the false-positive history so you know what you are looking at.
5. Still crashing on a specific file?
If SPM opens but dies on one image, suspect the file, not the program: an unusual format variant, a corrupt download, or a HEIC whose companion DLL is missing (HEIC checklist). Test with a plain JPEG pair to confirm the program itself is healthy.
There are no runtime prerequisites to install: the official package is only the EXE and its DLL. Advice telling you to install Visual C++ redistributables or DirectX for SPM is wrong.
