Make a Wiggle GIF from a Stereo Pair in StereoPhoto Maker

A wiggle GIF alternates the left and right views of a stereo pair a few times a second. With no glasses and no special screen, the rapid alternation gives a genuine impression of depth — it is the most shareable stereo format on the ordinary web. StereoPhoto Maker can generate one from any aligned pair.

Make the GIF

  1. Align the pair and set the window first — wiggle amplifies alignment errors into a seasick wobble, so this step is not optional.
  2. Choose a subject with a clear foreground/background split; depth reads best when layers are distinct.
  3. Generate the animated GIF from the pair using SPM’s GIF output.
  4. Preview it at the size you will publish. Large GIFs are heavy files; downscale for web use.

What makes a good wiggle subject

  • Still life and objects with strong depth layering — excellent.
  • Landscapes with a near foreground element — good.
  • Portraits — risky: any tiny misalignment reads as the face “swimming”. Align meticulously or skip.
  • Anything that moved between the two shots — the movement turns into flicker; avoid.

For the single-camera shooting technique behind many wiggle GIFs, see the cha-cha method. For static sharing instead, an anaglyph or a depth-map 3D photo may serve better.
